What's your place value?

The concept of Place Value was revisited with the students through an activity. The class was divided into two teams. Each student was given a digit card (0-9). On the floor I had taped Place Cards (ones through thousands and empty cards for beyond). I called out a number (e.g., 2,369) for one team. Students with the correct digit card had to rush to stand in the proper place to show their number. The team that correctly created the number earned a point for the team. This was done and then the students themselves suggested the place values beyond thousands. The students were then introduced to the Indian and International system of numbering and the use of commas to help in the reading of large numbers. The students then practised writing numbers in words.
